Originally named “Smith’s Patent Process Germ Flour”, a competition was held in 1890 to rename the brand, with a £25 reward going to the winner. A man named Herbert Grime was successful with his suggestion of “Hovis”, derived from the Latin word “Hominis Vis” – translated to “Strength of Man”.
