UK food exports hit record-breaking quarter

UK food exports hit record-breaking quarter

According to the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) the first quarter of 2017 saw food and drink exports rise to £4.9bn, reportedly the largest first quarter value ever recorded.

The fall in the pound has made British export products cheaper on the international market and has therefore increased the demand.

Government changes affecting UK export industry

The FDF have called to the new government to recognise the importance of UK produce and the potential growth of food and drink manufacturers. Currently only 20% of UK manufacturers actively export their products. Specialists from the FDF want to work in partnership with the Department for International Trade to increase the export of UK specialist food and drink.

Non-EU exports have also increased to countries such as China and the USA, which paves a promising path for Brexit and trade negotiation. However, it is important to note that 65% of UK exports are purchased by EU countries, so Brexit deals will have a huge impact on the industry.
